Mountain Bluebirds

It’s officially taken 17 years for me to enjoy mountain bluebirds nesting right on my own property! Two years ago my husband, John, and I downsized from our 7 acre hobby farm in Redmond, Oregon, to a half acre lot in beautiful Powell Butte, Oregon (Brasada Ranch). I placed nesting boxes all over our previous property (spaced appropriately apart) being careful to have the correct size opening, sound makers/flash tape to keep other pesky birds away that would dominate them and take over the box, but nothing worked; until we moved!

This shot is the female mountain bluebird bringing the first nesting material to the box. When I saw this huge stick she was attempting to line the box with, I really couldn't believe it! It looked to me like she was fly fishing!!
